The Middle East is turning to innovation in a post oil economy. As I walked around the exhibition halls at GITEX Technology Week 2017, I witnessed dozens of companies embracing economic diversity. Industries like financial technology, healthcare, construction and transportation are spurring regional development of cloud computing while billions are being spent on the datacenter market.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has revealed a number of initiatives and projects implemented by Eve Committee since the beginning of 2017, covering various fields including culture, sports, entertainment, family, society, charity, as well as initiatives aiming at enhancing happiness, positivity and gender balance. The total number of initiatives implemented by the Committee during 2017 reached 30 initiatives, with many still ongoing and to be completed by the end of the year.

Smart Dubai has expanded its "Paperless Finance" project to cover various Dubai Government entities, where it will fully digitise these entities' financial operations, eliminating paper transactions.

Broadband packages in the UAE have been ranked most expensive in the Middle East, according to data from 3,351 individual broadband packages gathered by BDRC Continental and compiled and analyzed by Cable.co.uk during the eight-week period up to 12 October 2017.

"Information is currency in the digital economy," said Michael Strople, Chairman of MEF and President of Enterprise Networks at Zayo Group, speaking at MEF 2017 in Orlando, FL. The Smart Dubai Office (SDO) took home the prestigious City Project Award for the Dubai Blockchain Strategy at the Smart Cities Expo & World Congress, which took place in Barcelona, Spain, on November 14-16, 2017. The Strategy won first place following fierce competition against 308 projects from 58 countries.

Digital transformation and disruption is driven by IoT (Internet of Things), increasing cloud IP traffic, artificial intelligence (AI), software-centricity, and pervasive security, according to Josh Goodell, VP, Intelligent Edge, AT&T, speaking at MEF 2017 in Orlando, Florida. Goodell has led the initiative to redefine and deploy AT&T’s first SDN capabilities to enable fully automated service delivery to drive down costs.
