Dubai Civil Defence and Huawei announced a historic MoU to collaborate on a number of ICT initiatives that will lead to the creation of a next-generation, Smart City infrastructure for the safety, security and happiness of Dubai's inhabitants.  The MoU was signed during Huawei's Global Safe City Summit, held in Dubai on 26 and 27 April, 2017, which brought more than 350 global public safety and security stakeholders to the UAE to share experiences, insights and successes during the two-day event.

Artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Virtual Reality, bespoke services, and sentiment mapping were a few of the prototype solutions, showcased as a result of the first Happiness Hack Dubai held at Dubai Airports in early February.

The key findings and policy recommendations made by the ITU Focus Group on Digital Financial Services following the conclusion of its extensive two-year consultation process have been hailed by stakeholders across the ICT and financial-services sectors as an 'incredible success'. The ITU Focus Group presented its 85 'policy recommendations' at a workshop entitled 'Digital Financial Services and Financial Inclusion' hosted by the World Bank in Washington D.C. on 19 April.

AI innovation will be central to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will help solving humanity's grand challenges by capitalizing on the unprecedented quantities of data now being generated on sentiment behavior, human health, commerce, communications, migration and more.

"The UAE is on the edge of becoming a 'Frontrunner' in Huawei's 2017 Global Connectivity Index," said Mr. Sami Nashwan, VP Strategy at Huawei Middle East, discussing the company's fourth annual study at a press briefing in Dubai on April 30.  The report provides a "strong view" on how countries have evolved their ICT infrastructure, and also how they have evolved from digital transformation, during the last three years.

5G MENA 2017, the two-day networking event that gathers all the leading industry players and experts in the MENA region together, hosted its seventh installment in which it discussed the best practices required in relation to developing effective 5G strategies and LTE deployments. The conference which was held in the Dubai World Trade Centre attracted thousands of attendees from the telecommunications and technology sector.

Telecom Review held its 8th edition of Telecom Review Leader's Summit in Beirut, Lebanon, on April 20, 2017. The successful event gathered VIPs, CXOs and leaders in the telecommunications industry to share and discuss current and evolving trends.
