Along the sidelines of GITEX 2024, Telecom Review conducted an exclusive interview with Rami Osman, Director for Business Development, MediaTek Middle East and Africa. He emphasized how MediaTek is strengthening its market presence in the region by focusing on providing exceptional value through strategic collaborations with OEMs, ODMs, and telecom operators.

How is MediaTek contributing to enabling affordable 5G technologies in the MEA region?

According to a recent report by Counterpoint, smartphone shipments in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region grew 3% YoY in Q2 2024. 5G is rapidly growing due to increasing competition among OEMs, lower prices, and wider product availability. While 5G is mainly prevalent in the GCC region, we strive to enable affordable 5G technologies across the other parts of the Middle East and most of Africa.

High-speed mobile connectivity is catalyzing dramatic digital transformation worldwide, bringing to life exciting new applications in spatial computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and more.  At MediaTek, we believe that the adoption of 5G is propelled by optimal availability and affordable pricing, especially in emerging markets. In a concerted effort to boost adoption, we have been collaborating with OEMs and telecom operators to break the circle of lack of development across these emerging markets.

MediaTek is also investing in entry-level 5G solutions to further enhance affordability and remains the world's largest supplier of 5G CPE, while focusing on reducing costs and making 5G technology more affordable.

How is MediaTek increasing digital adoption and promoting growth across verticals in the MEA region?

MediaTek is driving digital adoption and fostering growth across various sectors in the MEA region through strategic collaborations with OEMs, ODMs, and telecom operators.  MediaTek's efforts focus on delivering cutting-edge technology across a broad spectrum of industries, including smartphones, smart devices, automotive, satellite connectivity, and next-generation wearables.

By collaborating closely with regional technology and telecom players, we aim to accelerate digital adoption through innovations like the MediaTek Dimensity series for 5G smartphones, Filogic solutions for Wi-Fi 6/7, and Dimensity Auto for smart vehicle technologies. These partnerships enable us to tailor our offerings to meet the specific needs of the MEA market, thereby driving the digital transformation of the region.

Additionally, MediaTek is leveraging advanced technologies like AI, IoT, and 5G to enhance consumer experiences and create new growth opportunities across various verticals. Our approach to innovation, combined with an extensive product portfolio and strategic collaborations, positions MediaTek as a key player in the MEA region’s digital ecosystem.

How is MediaTek leveraging its collaborations with OEMs, ODMs and telecom operators to expand its market presence in this region?

MediaTek is strengthening its market presence in the region by focusing on providing exceptional value through strategic collaborations with OEMs, ODMs, and telecom operators. OEMs like OPPO, TECNO, vivo, and Xiaomi continue to rely on MediaTek chipsets because of the value we offer. MediaTek is focused on providing optimal outcomes to end consumers. However, our primary aim is to serve OEMs and ODMs through our technological expertise and market positioning.

We rely on these associations to gain insights into their markets and excel in two key areas: research and development (R&D) and productization. Recognizing the importance of precision in these areas, especially in a highly sensitive market, MediaTek ensures that its R&D efforts are effectively translated into successful products, thereby enabling expansion in the region.

How do you plan to continue driving the progress of MediaTek MEA's three major strategic focus areas: connectivity, smartphone and AIoT?

We are capitalizing on our strong position in various technologies and markets to continue driving progress in MediaTek MEA's three major strategic focus areas: connectivity, smartphones, and AIoT.

MediaTek is leading the charge in connectivity as the world's largest supplier of DSL, GPON, and Wi-Fi chipsets. As markets transition from DSL to optical broadband, particularly in emerging regions, we are ensuring a smooth shift by providing advanced solutions in fixed and wireless broadband.

Our comprehensive portfolio, which includes 5G CPEs, Wi-Fi 6, and the latest Wi-Fi 7 technologies, allows us to meet the diverse needs of different markets. The move from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 7, exemplified by our high-end products from Samsung and vivo, underscores our ability to deliver cutting-edge connectivity solutions across various consumer and enterprise applications.

In the smartphone sector, we remain focused on enhancing user experiences through high-quality services like affordable 5G and 4K streaming—a standard expectation among consumers. By integrating our advanced 5G and Wi-Fi technologies with AIoT applications, we are poised to unlock new opportunities and drive innovation in the region's consumer electronics and telecommunications sectors.

MediaTek’s Genio AIoT development platform, for instance, powers point-of-sale (POS) terminals, ensuring secure and seamless payment experiences. As such, POS hardware suppliers like iMin are able to offer revolutionary Android Self Ordering Kiosks like the Crane 1 Multi-purpose IDS and Swan 1 Pro Desktop POS which are powered by MediaTek.

What are MediaTek’s latest technological advancements and features in relation to AI-powered chipsets.

On a global scale, MediaTek recently unveiled the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Flagship SoC. This SoC offers exceptional performance and efficiency for cutting-edge AI experiences. It combines a second-generation, all-big core design and supports Agentic AI to further autonomous, goal-oriented workloads.

The Arm Immortalis-G925 12-core GPU paves the way for surreal gaming experiences as well.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 is built on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, providing up to 40% more power efficiency than its predecessor.

MediaTek also unveiled the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X, both of which are designed to deliver exceptional performance and efficiency for high-tech mobile devices. These 4 nm chipsets are built for ultra-efficiency, offering significant improvements in power consumption and performance.

The inclusion of the Arm Mali-G615 GPU, along with MediaTek’s HyperEngine optimizations, results in a 20% faster frame rate and improved energy efficiency, making these chipsets particularly suited for gaming and multitasking.

The AI capabilities of the Dimensity 7300 series are powered by the MediaTek NPU 655, which doubles the AI task efficiency compared to its predecessor. This chipset supports mixed precision data types, enhancing memory efficiency and allowing for larger AI models to be utilized more effectively. These advancements make the Dimensity 7300 series ideal for AI-enhanced computing tasks, including AI-driven photography and video processing.

In terms of photography, the Dimensity 7300 chipsets come equipped with the MediaTek Imagiq 950, which supports a 200 MP main camera and features a 12-bit HDR-ISP.
