At this year's MBBF conference, Huawei made “MAGICSwave” with a groundbreaking demonstration of its all-weather all-terrain microwave technology.

This innovation showcased Huawei's commitment to advancing wireless communication, even in challenging environmental conditions. Designed to ensure uninterrupted and reliable performance regardless of the weather and the terrain, this technology marks a significant leap forward in continuous microwave transmission.

The conference highlighted how Huawei's microwave solutions are specifically tailored to meet the needs of modern networks, whether it be within bustling urban hubs or remote areas where connectivity is crucial. By addressing the demand for stable and efficient communication in diverse and often harsh climates, Huawei is setting a new standard in the telecommunications industry.

In an exclusive interview with Telecom Review, James Zeng, President of Huawei's Microwave Product Line, shared insights into the innovative features that make this achievement possible. “I believe it [MBBF] has been a great success, particularly the Microwave roundtable session. This has been the most satisfying conference in recent years,” Zeng remarked.

Enhancing Reliability: Huawei’s Ubiquitous Microwave Technology

When asked about Huawei’s all-weather all-terrain microwave technology, Zeng elaborated on the concept of ubiquitous microwaves. He explained that significant advancements have been made to ensure stable transmission under all weather and all terrain conditions. For starters, Huawei has adopted new materials that enhance the durability and reliability of its equipment against extreme weather, such as strong winds and intense heat, rain, and snow. This attention to material performance allows Huawei's microwave solutions to thrive in any climate.

Zeng also highlighted the implementation of intelligent beam tracking (IBT) technology of Huawei’s antennas. This innovation enables the system to automatically adjust to any slight deformations caused by high winds when mounted on towers, ensuring optimal alignment, and maintaining strong signal strength. Furthermore, advanced digital signal processing techniques have been introduced to manage signal reflections, ensuring consistent and high-quality transmission even under challenging conditions.

“Our comprehensive approach—combining new materials, IBT antennas, and advanced signal processing—enables our microwave solutions to function reliably in all transmission scenarios,” he summarized.

A Historic Milestone: Integrating Microwave and Base-Station Antennas

The conference also spotlighted another remarkable achievement: the integration of microwave and base station antennas for the first time in history. Zeng explained that optimizing antenna space has long been a challenge for telecom operators, and Huawei has dedicated itself to reducing both the number and size of antennas required.

This year, they have succeeded in integrating microwave and base station antennas into a single unit, simplifying deployment while achieving a more compact design. This innovation not only enhances operational efficiency but also features automatic antenna adjustment capabilities, ensuring optimal performance in varying conditions.

Ultimate Capability: 50 Gbps Ultra-Bandwidth Microwave for the 5.5G Era

As the industry gears up for the 5.5G era, Zeng addressed concerns about whether microwave technology could meet the increased bandwidth requirements. He confidently stated that Huawei has developed four innovative solutions to significantly enhance transmission efficiency. With these advancements, their microwave technology can now achieve data rates of up to 50 gigabits per second. This high-capacity solution has already been adopted by several telecom operators, including du in the UAE and leading telecoms across Africa, demonstrating Huawei’s commitment to supporting the bandwidth demands of the upcoming 5.5G era.

Zeng also acknowledged the ongoing relevance of 4G capacity expansion and the deeper rollout of 5G. He noted that telecom operators are at varying stages in their deployment of these technologies, and one of their biggest challenges is protecting their investments while evolving their networks.

To address this, he emphasized the importance of adopting innovative network architectures that allow for seamless transitions between technology generations. By implementing flexible and future-proof microwave solutions, operators can enhance their current capacity for 4G and 5G while ensuring scalability to address the demands of 5.5G. This approach maximizes the value of their investments and prepares their networks for future requirements without the need for frequent overhauls.

Through these advancements, Huawei is not just introducing technical innovations; it is pioneering a paradigm shift in how telecom sites operate, paving the way for a smarter, more efficient future in network infrastructure.
