Download speed refers to how quickly users receive text, images, music, video and other data online. Most online activity involves downloading, including viewing web pages, streaming video and gaming. ISPs and data plans partially determine the download speed.
The Speedtest Global Index compares internet speed data from around the world on a monthly basis. Data for the Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest every month.
Internet measurements made with Speedtest occur at the times and in the places that are most relevant to the person taking the test. Each time a test is initiated, a snapshot of what the internet looks like at that place and time is recorded. When aggregated together, these individual experiences represent the typical internet performance for a given location.
