The UAE Ministry of Economy and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have jointly committed to bilateral cooperation, aiming to catalyze further economic growth, entrepreneurship, and social and cultural development between the UAE and the US.

This collaboration was solidified when UAE Minister of Economy, His Excellency Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri; and Kathi Vidal, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO, formally signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a ceremony held in New York City.

IP-Centric MoU

The new MoU outlines a series of collaborative efforts between the UAE Ministry of Economy and the USPTO.

Firstly, both parties will share best practices related to intellectual property and relevant laws, ensuring that each can benefit from the other's expertise and experiences.

Additionally, they will provide technical assistance and participate in capacity-building programs, which will help enhance their respective capabilities in managing and protecting intellectual property.

Lastly, the two governmental institutions will engage in ongoing discussions and consultations on IP protection issues that are of mutual concern to address and resolve these matters effectively.

Strengthened UAE-US Partnership

During his visit to the US, the UAE Minister underscored the achievements garnered due to  strengthened trade relations between the UAE and the US, attributing these achievements to policy adjustments that have enticed more investors, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals to the UAE.

Minister Al Marri conveyed a straightforward message: "The UAE is open for business." He emphasized the nation's efforts in facilitating business operations for US companies, startups, and investors, resulting in a significant upsurge in investment and trade between the two countries.

Highlighting the advanced technology sector as a pivotal area of bilateral collaboration, Minister Al Marri referenced Microsoft's USD 1.5 billion investment in G42 in April 2024 as a notable example.

He asserted that partnerships between the UAE and the US would expedite the spread of generative AI (GenAI) and next-generation digital infrastructure and services worldwide, fostering fairness, equity, and accessibility of AI, particularly in the Global South.

The UAE's reputation for offering a stable and inviting business environment, coupled with initiatives supporting capital access and strategic expansion, has rendered it an increasingly favored destination for international investors, including those from the US.
