In a compelling keynote during the 18th edition of the Telecom Review Leaders’ Summit, Marco Lichtfous, Managing Director at PMP Strategy Luxembourg, delivered a thought-provoking message about the evolving role of the communications industry.

Speaking with clarity and conviction, he outlined a roadmap for moving from being mere enablers to becoming proactive solution providers for various industries.

Reflecting on recent challenges such as geopolitical tensions and the COVID-19 pandemic, Lichtfous emphasized the resilience and innovation demonstrated by the industry. “The reliance and solutions that have emerged with today’s technology are fantastic,” he noted.

From network enhancements to sustainability-focused initiatives, the breadth of advancements is undeniable. “We’ve seen breakthroughs in predictive maintenance, smart vehicle charging, mental healthcare management, and even agriculture,” he added.

However, Lichtfous challenged the audience to rethink the industry’s role. “What I haven’t really heard is how we take the reins and say, ‘We can be your solution providers.’ We’re not just data and network managers; we can go further,” he asserted. This shift, he argued, is not just aspirational but essential for staying relevant in a rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.

Quoting a speaker from earlier in the day, Lichtfous said, “Mr. Osman reminded us, ‘We used to play offense. Now we’re playing defense.’ Isn’t it time to play offense again?” He used this analogy to underscore the urgency for the industry to adopt a bolder approach.

Lichtfous pointed to the fintech sector as an example of how industries can move beyond infrastructure roles. “Developers in financial services have already embraced this mindset. They’re not just enablers; they’re out in the market offering solutions directly to their customers,” he observed.

He proposed a similar strategy for the communications industry, suggesting a focus on building ecosystems that actively address client needs. “Why don’t we approach car manufacturers and say, ‘We can provide the infrastructure and predictive maintenance solutions that enhance your manufacturing capabilities?’” he asked.

In closing, Lichtfous urged attendees to think about the future with greater ambition. “We have unique capabilities. Let’s use them to create new business models and revenue generators, and, ultimately, to lead rather than follow,” he concluded.

His words served as a powerful call to action for industry leaders to rethink their potential and take bold steps toward innovation.
