Samsung Electronics posted financial results for Q2 2017. The company's components businesses and sales of the S8 and S8+ contributed to strong results. Samsung's revenue for the quarter was KRW 61 trillion (approximately US$ 54.2 million), an increase of KRW 10.06 trillion YoY (year on year), while operating for the quarter posted a record KRW 14.07 trillion, an increase of KRW 5.92 trillion year on year.
The steady fall of mobile roaming rates
In 2015, the European Commission announced that by June 2017 mobile roaming charges would be abolished throughout the 28 nation European Union. The fall of roaming rates appears to be an international trend even in the GCC. In May, the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) announced that roaming charges for voice calls and SMS will be further reduced from April 1 next year in a move to continuously reduce roaming charges across the region.
Discovery Channel parent to buy Scripps Networks for $14.6 billion
The parent company of Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, Discovery Communications, is forking out $14.6 billion, or $90 per share, based on Discovery's Friday, July 21 closing price, to purchase Scripps Networks, the parent company of the Food Network and Travel Channel. The deal will combine two major US television companies, further consolidating the media industry. The transaction is expected to close by early 2018.
