Nokia has announced its ambitious plan to transition to 100% recyclable packaging for its entire Lightspan portfolio of broadband access nodes by the end of 2023. This significant step builds o Nokia's dedication to fostering a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to its product packaging.

Having already introduced environmentally conscious packaging for its broadband customer premises equipment in 2022, Nokia's latest initiative aims to eliminate non-biodegradable foam, plastic, bleaching agents, toxic materials and chemical treatments from its packaging materials. The company is replacing traditional protective plastic covers with a biodegradable alternative, while the buffer material used for product protection is now composed of fully recyclable cardboard components, meeting the stringent standards of the Forest Stewardship Council.

In a bid to promote circular economy principles, Nokia's new packaging is not only recyclable but also designed for reuse in return shipments, reducing overall waste and environmental impact.

Geert Heyninck, head of broadband networks for fixed at Nokia, mentioned:Eco-friendly product packaging is a major contributor to our climate and environmental ambitions. By using 100% recyclable materials, we help to reduce waste and contribute to a circular economy. The packaging is also more compact, which allows more efficient transport and further reduces CO2 emissions by up to 60%.”

Looking ahead, Nokia has set ambitious science-based targets, aiming to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030. This commitment aligns with the global imperative to limit warming to 1.5°C by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Nokia's holistic approach to sustainability is not just a technological evolution but a crucial step toward a greener, more resilient future.
