Finnish telecommunications vendor, Nokia, has acquired Rapid’s technology assets, including the world’s largest API hub and research and development (R&D) team.

This strategic acquisition aligns with Nokia’s efforts to expand its network API product roadmap and lead the application programming interface (API) ecosystem, including operators, systems integrators, independent software vendors, and hyperscalers.

Commenting on the acquisition, Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Service at Nokia, stated, “Operators need a bridge to connect to thousands of developers to drive enterprise and consumer value creation and monetize their networks.”

The initiative builds on the Finnish company’s plan to utilize 4G and 5G network capabilities and monetize network assets.

Network as Code Platform

By exposing standard network functions to developers, operators can build and sell new consumer, enterprise, and industrial applications.

Sahgal highlighted that the development of a robust API infrastructure platform will drive global adoption and accelerate network API-related product developments.

Nokia’s Network as Code platform, launched in 2023, has already secured 27 global partnerships, including BT, DISH, Google Cloud, Infobip, Orange, Telefónica, and Telecom Argentina.

The integration of Rapid’s API technology with Nokia’s Network as Code platform with a developer portal is poised to deliver substantial enhancements to operators, enabling seamless network integration, active control of API usage and exposure, improved API lifecycle management, and collaboration with Rapid’s global developer base through its public API marketplace.
