Slovenian operator, Telekom Slovenije, has launched the country’s first 5G network commercially.
They have decided to use 2600MHz spectrum which would not only support 5G, but 4G services as well.
According to the operator, they have invested in upgrading 150 base stations. These base stations cover 25% of the population and they have revealed their plans to reach around one-third of Slovenians by year’s-end.
The country’s 5G auction is expected to take place at the end of the year as a direct result of delays on adopting the revised Radio Frequency Spectrum Management Strategy.
The Slovenian telecom regulator plans to auction frequencies in the 700MHz, 1400MHz/1500MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 3600MHz and 26GHz bands.
“After a period of kilobit and megabit speeds, we are entering the gigabit decade by upgrading from 4G to 5G. And since every future begins with the first step, in this step, we have carried out an evolutionary upgrade of existing mobile technology based on established and secure standards that we have known and upgraded for several decades. We are planning at least two more major phases of 5G development in the coming years,” commented Telekom Slovenije board memver, Matjaz Bericic.
