Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has signed an agreement with mobile network operators Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, e& Egypt, and Orange to provide a Wi-Fi calling service that aims to foster the state’s telecom market.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology, H.E. Dr. Amr Talaat, said the launch aims to enhance communications services and secure new features.

Talaat added that 3,000 mobile towers were established in 2024, in line with the state’s plan to ensure high-efficiency coverage throughout Egypt.

Wi-Fi calling allows users to make high-quality voice calls with clear sound in places with poor network coverage, such as towers and commercial buildings. The new service will operate in alignment with the pricing plan subscribed to by the user and no additional fees will be incurred.

Mohamed Nasr, Telecom Egypt CEO, said, “This milestone was made possible through close cooperation with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology. It is a testament to our shared vision of advancing Egypt’s digital transformation and enhancing connectivity for all.”

On December 5th, 2024, the NTRA officially launched eSIM technology in Egypt, allowing users to switch between mobile operators without the need for a physical SIM card.
