The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) has mandated mobile service providers, Ooredoo Qatar Q.P.S.C. and Vodafone Qatar P.Q.S.C., to shift to the high-speed Time Division Duplex (TDD) technique in the 2.6 GHz frequency band to enhance the country’s public mobile network performance.

In line with the recommendations from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the standards of international standardization bodies and organizations, the decision optimizes the use of the frequency band to align with regional harmonization, enhancing telecommunication experiences through 4G and 5G network technologies in the Gulf.

The Time Division Duplex Technique

The TDD technique is poised to deliver more spectrum efficiency and greater flexibility in spectrum assignment, ultimately improving the capabilities of mobile service providers and equipping them to rapidly provide higher quality services to meet Qatar’s increasing telecommunication service demands.

Mobile service providers must cease the current Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) operations and facilitate the transition to TDD by March 31, 2025. The readiness of their networks must be guaranteed to maintain high-caliber data speed services in the country.

Each service provider is tasked with minimizing the impact during the transition, with improvements expected post-migration.

The approach also includes allocating additional bandwidth to mobile service providers to meet the increasing demands of high-speed mobile services driven by the growth of cutting-edge innovations, such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G applications, cloud and edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The CRA’s initiative reflects its commitment to enhancing the country’s telecommunication services to support the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third Qatar National Development Strategy 2034 – 2030 by providing reliable connectivity and meeting the digital demands of its residents.
